Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Equidev runs WASH programs across Tajikistan. We focus on improving policies and advocacy, infrastructure development, encouraging healthy behaviors, and strengthening local institutions. We also test and scale new technologies to create lasting impact.

CASE STUDY

Equidev has introduced decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) into healthcare facilities and communities across multiple regions – including Vahdat, Hisor, Ayni, Fayzobod, and Panjakent – improving sanitation services for close to 300,000 people. These systems have reduced environmental pollution and improved hygiene conditions in public institutions. In parallel, through a UNICEF-supported program, Equidev launched the Three Star Approach in 50 schools, strengthening WASH performance and hygiene behaviors across all participating schools. The initiative also trained school administrators and students to manage their own operation, maintenance, and fundraising, supporting the sustainability of WASH services in schools over time.

Public Health & Nutrition

Equidev promotes public health through behavior change, hygiene education, and community-based interventions, linking WASH, nutrition, and health systems.

CASE STUDY

Equidev has reached tens of thousands of children and families through hygiene promotion and behavior change programs. Across 50 schools and rural communities, over 35,000 students and 15,000 community members have improved their hygiene practices, including handwashing and menstrual hygiene management. In addition, 70 community health teams have been trained in better health and hygiene practices. Community-based campaigns in rural districts have further strengthened awareness and the adoption of safe sanitation and food hygiene practices.

Enterprise & Skills Development

Equidev strengthens local capacities through training, skills development, and knowledge transfer, enabling communities and professionals to deliver sustainable services and improve livelihoods.

CASE STUDY

Equidev has trained 500 teachers, more than 200 rural health workers, and nearly 75,000 community members across rural Tajikistan, using “Training of Trainer” approaches to ensure sustainable knowledge transfer. Equidev also developed and integrated a 72-hour university course on decentralized sanitation solutions into the Tajik Technical University curriculum, helping build the skills of future engineers and specialists.

Agriculture & Economic Justice

Equidev supports rural livelihoods and food security by promoting sustainable agricultural practices, skills development, and income-generating opportunities, particularly for women.

CASE STUDY

In the Khatlon Region, Equidev supported 600 vulnerable households to establish family poultry production systems, improving both income and nutrition. The project provided training, veterinary support, and inputs, resulting in increased egg production, improved dietary diversity, and additional household income. Building on this work, Equidev is running a program supported by the World Food Programme (WFP) to train 600 women in rural Tajikistan in food safety and sustainable home production. The program also provides supplies to help support improve household nutrition and increase income generation.

Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

Equidev helps communities become more resilient to climate change by raising awareness, building skills, and engaging communities. This includes support to adapt to climate risks like water shortages and natural disasters.

CASE STUDY

With support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Equidev ran a nationwide climate change program across 23 districts, directly engaging more than 640 participants through seminars, workshops, youth events, and private sector discussions. The project also developed a national outreach strategy and produced 20 short educational videos. Through campaigns, training sessions, and public events, the initiative improved understanding of climate change and encouraged practical ways to adapt among communities, institutions, and private sector stakeholders.

Green Growth

Equidev promotes environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient solutions that contribute to long-term green development and climate resilience.

CASE STUDY

Equidev promotes green growth by using resource-efficient and environmentally sustainable solutions. This includes decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) which are low-cost, energy-efficient, and help reduce pollution and protect water resources.

At School No. 3 in Vahdat, Equidev tested an innovative system that combines rainwater harvesting, water treatment, and solar power. It provides a sustainable source of safe drinking water and continues working even during power outages. In the Sughd region, Equidev also supports better groundwater management by improving regulations, data systems, and institutional capacity to ensure water is used sustainably.
