Equidev is pleased to announce its new partnership with BORDA to improve sanitation services at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Panjakent City, northern Tajikistan. This project, titled “CLEAN WATER – Improving Sanitation Services with Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS),” is funded by Lions Clubs and aims to upgrade the hospital’s WASH services and protect water resources. The project will run from May 15, 2024, to June 15, 2025.

The overall objective of the project is to improve people’s health and environmental conditions as a result of better sanitation services and hygiene behavior at hospitals in Tajikistan. Further objectives of the project will include improving sustainable sanitation and hygiene through wastewater treatment systems, protection of environment and resources by recycling the treated wastewater in gardens as well as improving the institutional managerial functions of hospitals and health centers.

Currently, the hospital relies on a septic tank for sewage, which causes bad odors and poses environmental and health risks due to the untreated waste. To address these issues, we will implement DEWATS, providing sustainable and effective wastewater treatment. DEWATS offers multiple benefits for the hospital, including the efficient management of wastewater, reduction of odors, and the prevention of environmental contamination. By treating wastewater onsite, DEWATS ensures that the hospital maintains a hygienic environment, crucial for patient and staff health.

The project plans to construct a decentralized wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) and improve WASH facilities in Infectious Diseases Hospital, Panjakent City. Accompanying measures

in this project include organizing of a 1-day awareness raising workshop for key stakeholders, organizing of a 1-day operation and maintenance training for hospital caretakers and organizing

of a 1-day training on hygiene and sanitation for hospital staff.

Notably, this is the fifth project funded by Lions Clubs International and implemented in partnership with BORDA in Tajikistan.

Equidev’s ongoing efforts include another DEWATS project in the Faizobod district, funded by the Government of Switzerland. As a pioneer in DEWATS projects in Tajikistan, we continue to lead the way in improving sanitation and environmental health in the region.

By enhancing WASH services and promoting sustainable practices, we aim to contribute to achieving SDG goals, including SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
