On January 26, 2024, Barbara Yale, the Chief of Party of the USAID-funded the Feed the Future Tajikistan Agriculture and Land Governance Activity, and Gulchehra Boboeva, the CEO of Equidev, signed a grant agreement.
This agreement aims to empower vulnerable households in the south-western Khatlon region by enabling them to start family poultry production. The goal is to provide an alternative source of income, employment opportunities, and improve the food security and nutrition of their families.
During the period of February to September 2024, Equidev will identify 300 low-income and vulnerable families from six selected districts, including J.Balhi, Jayhun, Dusti, Nosiri Khisrav, Shahritus, and Qubodiyon. Equidev will establish 20 family poultry production groups focused on egg production and will provide comprehensive training and ongoing technical support to ensure the success of the initiative.
Equidev will play an active role in the distribution of chickens and feed for laying hens, while also training beneficiaries in planning, record-keeping, saving, budgeting, and marketing their products. Each beneficiary household is expected to receive 19 hens and 1 rooster, as well as 120 kg of feed for laying hens. Equidev will also monitor the beneficiaries to track the percentage of eggs consumed, sold, and/or hatched.
It’s important to note that this grant is provided within the framework of the USAID-funded Feed the Future Tajikistan Agriculture and Land Governance Activity and entails the broader significance to improve the economic condition in the region.
