Starting in 2025, Tajik Technical University (TTU) will offer an innovative 3-credit course on Decentralized Sanitation Systems (DSS). This course, designed for students in “Water Supply and Wastewater Systems” and “Rational Use and Protection of Water Resources,” spans 72 hours, blending lectures, practical sessions, and hands-on work with expert guidance. Developed as part of the “Building Knowledge and Awareness on Sustainable Sanitation Solutions” project, funded by the Government of Switzerland, this course represents one of the project’s major achievements in advancing sustainable sanitation education.

To ensure successful delivery of the course, Equidev and BORDA organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) from July 29 to August 2, 2024, at TTU’s Faculty of Construction and Architecture. Ten teaching staff participated in the ToT, covering key topics such as decentralized sanitation, system design, construction methods, and operation and maintenance procedures.

A highlight of the training was a field visit to a decentralized wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) site near Dushanbe, offering participants valuable real-world experience. This practical exposure solidified their understanding and prepared them to confidently deliver the new course to students.

This new course marks a major step toward addressing the growing environmental and sanitation challenges in Tajikistan. By empowering future engineers with innovative skills, Equidev is playing a vital role in shaping sustainable solutions for communities across the country.
